I always read that as spiders representing something scary but something easy to kill, something that can be washed away by the rain, a life that can be taken without much thought or effort.

    Today...

Blows rain upon the one you loved
And though you were only sparring
There's blood on the eye, unlace the glove
Say, honey, I am not sorry

Stand here and name the one you loved
    Beneath the drifting ashes
And in naming, rise above time
    As it, flashing, passes

    We came by the boatload
    And were immobilised
    Worshiping volcanoes
    Charting the loping skies
The tides of the earth left
Us bound and calcified and made as
    Obstinate as obsidian
    Unmoving, save our eyes

    Just mooning and blinking
    From faces marked with coal
    Ash cooling and shrinking
    Cracks loud as thunder rollin',
    I swear
I know you; you know me
Where have we met before, tell me true?
    To whose authority
    Do you consign your soul?

"I have washed a thousand spiders down the drain" reminds me of seeing a BBC science programme as a kid where they explained that when you think you've washed a spider down a plughole it often gets trapped in a vortex of air and water just behind the 'strainer' part, not washed away. It waits for the water to stop and for the coast to be clear and then resumes its spidery business. They demonstrated with transparent plumbing.

So it's the same spider coming back! This made me happy as I like spiders and hated the thought of them being drownded. So that part of the song reads to me as her feeling guilty for something she doesn't have to feel guilty for, and the metaphorical "nuisances" of childhood growing to adulthood arent always what they seem - maybe not exactly what she meant but I like it

ooh neat! I like the idea of the returning spider.

I interpret the last line of that verse to be somewhat of a "man up" nod. Like she could possibly be eluding to gender roles of comfort, silence, and security.

theres a comparison to the transient nature of life that gets washed away by water, that could be what the tree and the spider have in common. Sorry if i'm saying the obvious. lol

    from Go Long

We both want the very same thing
We are praying I am the one to save you
But you don't even own your own violence
Run away from home, your heard is still blue

With the loneliness of you mighty men
With your jaws, and fists, and guitars and pens
And your sugarlip, but I've never been to the firepits
    With you mighty men

    Who made you this way
    Who made you this way
Who is going to bear your beautiful children
Do you think you can just stop
When you're ready for a change
Who will take care of you
    When you're old and dying

I've had this section of Only Skin stuck in my head all afternoon:

    I'm humming a threshing song
    until the night is over
    hold on!
    hold on!
hold your horses back from the fickle dawn

I have got some business out at the edge of town
candy weighing both of my pockets down
'til I can hardly stay afloat, from the weight of them
(and knowing how the common-folk condemn
what it is I do, to you, to keep you warm
being a woman, being a woman)

but always up the mountainside you're clambering
    groping blindly, hungry for anything:
picking through your pocket linings - well, what is this?
    scrap of sassafras, eh Sisyphus?

    water were your limbs
and the fire was your hair
and then the moonlight caught your eye
and you rose through the air
well, if you've seen true light
    then this is my prayer:
will you call me when you get there?
and I miss your precious heart!
and I miss your precious heart!
and miss, and miss, and miss, and miss
    and miss your heart!

    but release your precious heart
to it's feast for precious hearts...

It does not suffice for you to say I am a sweet girl,
Or to say you hate to see me sad because of you
It does not suffice to merely lie beside each other
As those who love each other do

    The universe is getting loose:
    sodden spread,
    from some leaden disuse,
    rushing, unhinged,
    towards diminishing lights,
    like a headless caboose.

I wanted to say: why the long face?
Sparrow, perch and play songs of long face
Burro, buck and bray songs of long face!
Sing: I will swallow your sadness and eat your cold clay
Just to lift your long face

And though it may be madness, I will take to the grave
    Your precious longface
And though our bones they may break, and our souls separate
    - why the long face?
And though our bodies recoil from the grip of the soil
    - why the long face?

I believe love will always surround you
Brave as a bear with a heart rare and true
But if you are scared, if you are blue
I have prepared this small song for you

This one is always in my head:

Hey hey hey, the end is near!
    On a good day,
you can see the end from here.
