Martin Shkreli Is Found Guilty of Fraud

Martin Shkreli, accused of defrauding his hedge fund investors and a pharmaceutical company, was convicted on three of eight counts on Friday, after a five-week trial in the Federal District Court in Brooklyn.

Mr. Shkreli was convicted of securities fraud in connection with his hedge fund MSMB Capital; of securities fraud in connection with another hedge fund he ran, MSMB Healthcare; and of conspiracy to commit securities fraud, related to a scheme in which he tried to secretly control a huge portion of shares of Retrophin, a drug company he started.

He faces up to 20 years on each of the first two counts, and up to five years on the final count.

    ...

He became widely known after raising the price of a drug called Daraprim to $750 a pill from $13.50 overnight. He courted controversy, defending the price increase, then bragging that he had bought the sole copy of a Wu-Tang Clan album for a reported $1 million.

How a fish tank helped hack a casino
Hackers are constantly looking for new ways to access people’s data. Most recently, the way was as simple as a fish tank.

The hackers attempted to acquire data from a North American casino by using an Internet-connected fish tank, according to a report released Thursday by cybersecurity firm Darktrace.

The fish tank had sensors connected to a PC that regulated the temperature, food and cleanliness of the tank.

“Somebody got into the fish tank and used it to move around into other areas (of the network) and sent out data,” said Justin Fier, Darktrace’s director of cyber intelligence.

The casino’s name and the type of data stolen were not disclosed in the report for security reasons, Darktrace said. The report said 10 GB of data were sent out to a device in Finland.

“This one is the most entertaining and clever thinking by hackers I’ve seen,” said Hemu Nigam, a former federal prosecutor for computer crimes and current chief executive of SSP Blue, a cybersecurity company.

Martin Shkreli to be jailed after bail is revoked
A judge sided with a government demand to jail Shkreli following his provocative online antics.

A defence attorney had argued in court papers that Shkreli's recent offer to pay a $5,000 bounty for securing a Hillary Clinton hair with a follicle while she's on a book tour was merely a tasteless joke comparable to some of President Donald Trump's derisive comments, not a threat worthy of putting him behind bars.

“Indeed, in the current political climate, dissent has unfortunately often taken the form of political satire, hyperbole, parody or sarcasm,” wrote the lawyer, Ben Brafman. “There is a difference, however, between comments that are intended to threaten or harass and comments — albeit offensive ones — that are intended as political satire or strained humor.”

The attorney was responding to government filings last week that argued Shkreli's behaviour was threatening enough to jail him while he awaits sentencing for his securities fraud conviction. Prosecutors said the posting prompted the Secret Service to use more resources because it ran the risk that many of Shkreli's social media followers would think he was serious.

The judge said the offer for Ms Clinton hair was “solicitation of an assault” that is not protected by the First Amendment, and there was “a risk someone may take” Shkreli up on his offer.
Potentially lethal levels of schadenfreude here.

This is probably the most complete description I've read about what is happening with the California fires.

Sen. Rand Paul’s injuries far more severe than initially thought

Sen. Rand Paul is recovering from five broken ribs and bruises to his lungs, and it is unclear when he will return to Washington, aides said Sunday, signaling that injuries he sustained Friday are far more severe than initially thought.

The second-term Republican senator from Kentucky and 2016 presidential candidate was attacked, allegedly by a next-door neighbor, Rene Boucher, 59, who was charged with fourth-degree assault.
“This type of injury is caused by high velocity severe force. It is not clear exactly how soon he will return to work, as the pain is considerable as is the difficulty in getting around, including flying,” Stafford said.

Paul has lung contusions, or bruises, caused by the broken ribs, Stafford said. He could not say whether one lung was bruised or both, but said Paul’s recovery could last several months. Such fractures can cause other significant medical problems, including internal bleeding, damage to other organs or pneumonia.

That's a weird story. I guess no one knows WHY. And... what does it mean for tax "reform"? Harder because they need every vote? Easier because he's part of the cuckoo wing they have to appease or they won't vote for it because it's not reactionary enough?

Yes, it's a weird story all around. Paul's attacker was his neighbor, they'd worked together too. The neighbor was liberal, a socialist, and he hit Paul in the chest so hard it could have killed him. I don't know with what. So was it a neighbor's spat? Political? What does it mean for Paul's job?

Russia has been banned from competing at the 2018 Olympics.

Their "clean" athletes, however, will be allowed to compete as "neutral athletes." Putin says he will not blockade or ask the athletes to boycott.
That means they can't have the Russian flag, can't march in the opening ceremony, won't hear the Russian Anthem on the podium, their outfits have to read as OAR instead of RUS (Olympic Athletes Russia).
Also no officials from the Russian Olympic Committee are present.. in fact some have been banned from the Olympics for life.

    WHAT A MESS.

The decision was made by the IOC after an intense investigation shown that as many as 1000 athletes in 2014 at the Sochi Games had their blood tests tampered with to not show doping. This is the first time a country has been banned for doping.

I just feel so badly for the Russian athletes that are doing the right thing.
