We get to watch an incredible actor behave like a monster and we like it, we love it, because he is so charming, and handsome. We like watching humans get beaten, and if such beatings are framed in the right way, in this case, in an important film about American history, then we will lap up all that brutality and want more. I know I did.

So yeah, I don't think that's a normal response. At all. Ever. If I had a friend who told me they had this reaction, I would be mortified and immediately reassess that friendship.

Big Little Lies was wonderful. Having been witness to and victim of DV, how well Skarsgård played an abuser was fucking terrifying and made me shudder. I had such a hard time watching his scenes because it was too real. I felt sick so many times watching that show. HE DID IT SO WELL. He's handsome and charming. But I did not want more, I did not lap it up, I did not like it.

I mean, it is exciting to see an actor at the height of their powers. To see a handsome and charming actor who you've come to admire play a role that makes you literally shudder in terror can be satisfying in an aesthetic way - like wow, this person made me feel x, y and z, they are really talented! But "lapping it up"??? No. Some of the best acted but most disturbing scenes I've watched have been so viscerally upsetting that despite their brilliance I never wanted to watch them again.

And can we discuss how racist it is that his takeaway from THAT movie was that it was the white dude's movie? Honestly, I don't even really remember him in it. He was such an archetype of slave owner that it wasn't anything revelatory to me. Maybe he gave a stunning performance that I don't remember, but ... it's still just a piece of a real black man's story brought to you by black men.

I must say, of all the people exposed after Weinstein and Spacey, Franco may be the one I'm least surprised about. It's kind of been a known fact for ages that he's a disgusting creep, right?

I Made the Pizza Cinnamon Rolls from Mario Batali’s Sexual Misconduct Apology Letter

    It's poignant, it's funny, it's insightful.

I make my own, because I’m a woman, and for us there are no fucking shortcuts. We spend 25 years working our asses off to be the most qualified Presidential candidate in U.S. history and we get beaten out by a sexual deviant who likely needs to call the front desk for help when he’s trying to order pornos in his hotel room.

Donald Trump is President, so I’m making the goddamn dough by scratch.

    ...

The pizza dough does not mix well with the sweetness. The icing is sickly sweet, the rolls themselves oddly savory. I was right about the texture – the dough is too tough. I hate them, but I keep eating them. Like I’m somehow destroying Batali’s shitty sexist horcrux in every bite.

Dan Harmon was fucking horrible to a writer who rejected him after two years of sexual harassment. Full account here, along with his 10-minute apology, which the writer, Megan Ganz, says she accepts

I think this is the first time there has been a seemingly sincere apology and someone owning up to what they did, and not trying to brush it off as misunderstanding, etc.

    Two big stories today.

Wahlberg: You can think what you like about how sincere his motives were, but to me the biggest story here is that this is a triumph of activism. The response to this story was so intense that Wahlberg either had his conscience stirred or was scared shitless. Either way $2M. Yay!

Dushku: Jesus. This is an ugly story; she goes into a lot of detail of grooming, etc. Obviously, trigger warnings apply. If you’re a Buffy person, the ending could choke you up a bit.

It's ok that he finally did the right thing, but Wahlburg has a long history of doing the WRONG thing. It's hard to give him an attaboy when it's not like he's finally woke.

Speaking of Massholes who need to be quiet and go away for a little...

I went on a date with Aziz Ansari. It turned into the worst night of my life.

This one is graphic in places, so be careful reading.

I don’t know much about him, but I do know that he has a nice guy image that apparently is complete bullshit. That is seriously fucking abusive behavior.

I tried reading that last night, but I found it written so badly (not to disparage the accuser: it's the writer who sucks) I couldn't follow it. I mean, it sounded bad, but I couldn't properly assess it because it was too hard for me to parse. You ever have that? A writer who you just can't understand a word they're saying? Especially when everyone else gets it and you don't? I'm not stupid or impatient, but it just hit all my weak spots of comprehension. Sometimes it's the opposite, that I really get something that a lot of other people have a hard time with.

ps this whole thing is really fucking with my head. I had a nightmare about Ewan McGregor. I apparently was an actor in a movie with him and he was a total nonsexual d-bag. He wrote my parents to find out what my bedtime was to get me into trouble. He had a major scandal in dreamworld where he peeled out of parking lots too loudly. My brain is seriously weird when I make up g-rated scandals but somehow turn them into nightmares.
