    Good thread idea.

    I'm not too knowledgeable on Christmas albums but I'm getting better, and I'm planning on getting the Songs for Christmas box set by Sufjan Stevens in the near future.

    But one Christmas/winter record I really like is Thea Gilmore's Strange Communion.

    It's mostly all originals with a couple of covers of songs by Elvis Costello and Yoko Ono, and has a lovely, warm feeling mostly throughout with acoustic guitars and violins etc. But "That'll Be Christmas" is a pleasant folky pop song, and "Cold Coming" is fast-paced, sinister goodness. The whole thing kicks off with a wonderful choral piece:

    I'm also not going to apologise for loving Cyndi Lauper's "Feels Like Christmas"!

    I am not a fan of Loreena McKennitt at all, but I love her first winter album - To Drive the Cold Winter Away. I'd post "Snow" from it, but all the videos on youtube are of the shitty second re-recorded version. The original is just harp and vocals.

    I'm not huge on Christmas music, but there are some recordings I really enjoy:

    * Sufjan's Christmas set is good (with some judicious trimming)
    * Sheryl Crow--Home for Christmas (underrated--it was only available at Hallmark stores for one season, and now only at Target)
    * Low--"Just Like Christmas"
    * Badly Drawn Boy--"Donna and Blitzen" (from the About a Boy soundtrack)
    * Sinead O'Connor--"Silent Night"
    * Freedy Johnston--"Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas"
    * Saint Etienne--"Snow"
    * Darlene Love--"Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)"
    * Tori Amos--"Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas"
    * Vince Guaraldi Trio--"Christmas Time Is Here (Instrumental)"

    I plan on buying the Annie Lennox Christmas album tomorrow.

    The ultimate:

    Also, obviously, Kate's December Will be Magic Again.

    I also always end up having Joni's "River" on permanent loop in my head this time of year.

    I'm not well versed in contemporary christmas music, but I do love the old traditionals and hymns.

    We used to sing this at christmas time when I was a kid, and my uncle would play guitar. It's also my favorite off of the Sufjan Stevens collection:

    the radio never plays my holiday faves.

    "honey, it was crazy as hell when you came here, but'chu in yo RIGHT damn mind now!!"

    only Shane & Kirsty could make a heartwarming seasonal classic full of such violence and bitter wit.

    Kate's classic, "December Will Be Magic Again", has already been mentioned. i also love this short little b-side from TRS era.

    no xmas mix is complete without both songs from the Cocteau Twins' Snow single.

    I don't understand the question, and I won't respond to it.

    Both of Over The Rhine's xmas albums make my holiday better each year:

    "Darkest Night of the Year" and "Snow Angels"

    My favourite Christmas song is a cliche, but it's Winter Wonderland.
    "A universe that needed someone to observe it in order to collapse it into existence would be a pretty sorry universe indeed."
