Just finished reading The Chamber of Secrets, I'm working my way through the whole series for the first time, and loved it! I just wish Harry was spending his full summer with the Weasleys.

    I am re-reading the books!

How would people rank the books?

    For me, it goes:

    1. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
    2. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
    3. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
    4. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
    5. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows
    6. Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone
    7. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

Oooh, I'm re-reading them too because I'm hoping to go back to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter in Orlando this year.

    For me, I'd say:

    Half-Blood Prince
    Goblet of Fire
    Order of the Phoenix
    Deathly Hallows
    Prisoner of Azkaban
    Chamber of Secrets
    Philosopher's/Sorcerer's Stone

For the longest time I thought Chamber of Secrets was just a boring retread of the first book but on my re-read I found it to be a marked improvement.

I don't have a ranking, but I think of them as tiered:

Tier 1: The Best of the Best
    Prisoner of Azkaban
    Order of the Phoenix
    Half-Blood Prince

Tier 2: Very very good but not quite The Best
    Goblet of Fire
    Deathly Hallows

Tier 3: Very good but a little too junior for me
    Philosophers Stone
    Chamber of Secrets

I'm sometimes tempted to push OOTP down to Tier 2, because Grawp is probably the worst and most unnecessary thing in any of the books but today I'm feeling generous

I don't have a ranking, like fullofwish. Azkaban is number one, but they all have their pluses and minuses, individual charm and humor. Sometimes I like SS/PS for its brevity, sometimes it's too short and uncomplicated.

Huh. It's summer again. Just about time for my annual* reread.

*sometimes I forget or feel the need another time of year.

I re-read Order of the Phoenix and it was too damn close to home.

    My ranking:

    Half-Blood Prince
    Order of the Phoenix
    Prisoner of Azkaban
    Deathly Hallows
    Goblet of Fire
    Chamber of Secrets
    Sorcerer's Stone

I mostly go back to the Philosopher's Stone for the nostalgia... I still get shivers down my spine when I read Hagrid's "Harry, yer a wizard."

Interesting theory I hadn't heard before

It’s all Harry’s fault. Well, partially. I suppose Voldemort can be saddled with an equal portion of the blame. The point is, the Dursleys were just minding their own business when a horcrux was dumped on their doorstep. For the next decade it proceeded to warp their minds, turning them from your garden variety insufferable human beings into horrible, heartless monsters. The fact that they survived such prolonged horcrux exposure without delving into insanity or abandoning a helpless child only solidifies their place among the pantheon of noble and virtuous heroes in the Harry Potter universe.

I can't believe I never considered this, now that I've read it. I'm shook. Time to re-read all the Dursley parts and figure out if this is right.

I mean, they were TERRIBLE to Lily and James, so it's not all Horcrux, but if it brings out the worst in people, it explains the cupboard under the stairs.

Right?! Just like Ron was already whiny and jealous. It finds your worst traits and turns them up to eleven.
