    Am I really the only one who loves "Swansea" that much? I think it's easily one of her most beautiful melodies.

    No MOM songs are in my list because I still can't get past her voice on that album. I'm sure I would love them otherwise, because the lyrics are beautiful.

    RANK CHECK TIME!

    I collated all of the Top 10 lists and here is our current Definitive Unforumzed Joanna Newsom Top 10. (I will add subsequent rankers' to the list too.)

    1= Only Skin
    1= Emily
    3= Sawdust and Diamonds
    3= Cosmia
    3= In California
    6. Go Long
    7= Peach Plum Pear
    7= Monkey and Bear
    9. Baby Birch
    10= Have One On Me
    10= '81

    Joanna songs with no Top 10 votes so far
    This Side of the Blue
    Cassiopeia
    Three Little Babes
    Ribbon Bows
    (plus the Yarn and Glue and Walnut Whales songs)

    Pretty good, I think - everything else has made it into people's lists

    I actually really do love Cassiopeia, though!

    That top 10 is a really good list, I think. I love that all of Ys made it in!

    I think it's a great list too, and I was pleased to see a lot of variety in the lists.

    For those interested in such matters, if we were doing a Joanna Top 20 the list would be completed by:

    12= Soft as Chalk
    12= Sadie
    12= Clam, Crab, Cockle, Cowrie
    12= Colleen
    12= Good Intentions Paving Company
    17= Sprout and the Bean
    17= Easy
    17= Bridges and Balloons

    1. Emily
    It's her most 'complete' song, the one that encapsulates all that is good about her. Great tune, arrangement and packed full of quotable lines. It's full of passion.
    Dumbstruck with the sweetness of being

    2. Sawdust and Diamonds
    The metronome plucking gives this song a real drama. Seeing it live is spellbinding.
    I wasn't born of a whistle Or milked from a thistle at twilight

    3. In California
    The most Ys-like song from HOOM, the musical arrangement is superb. The language is simpler than on Ys (lyrics rather than poetry), but utterly effective and really conjures up the scene.
    when you come and see me, in California, you cross the border of my heart

    4. Sadie
    Fan favourite from the early days. The metaphysical musings on the dog and bone is very affecting.
    And this is not my tune, but it's mine to use

    5. Only Skin
    The one that takes a whole side of vinyl. And that incredible final part.
    Rowing along, among the reeds, among the rushes
    I heard your song, before my heart had time to hush it!
    (I love the way she rushes those last few words)

    6. Sprout and the Bean
    The meticulous harp arrangement made this her breakthrough hit.
    I slept as though dead, dreaming seamless dreams of lead.

    7. Baby Birch
    Upon the release of HOOM it instantly took on the status of the live show encore song wit its dramatic final passage.
    There is a blacksmith and there is a shepherd and there is a butcher-boy
    And there is a barber who's cutting and cutting away at my only joy

    8. Clam Crab Cockle Cowrie
    A little gem of a song with many great lines.
    There are some mornings when the sky looks like a road

    9. Esme
    I can imagine Joanna scratching down these lyrics before she's even left this garden party. Perhaps one day soon she'll be writing about her own family?
    I believe love will always surround you, brave as a bear, with a heart rare and true.
    But If you are scared, if you are blue,
    I've prepared a small song for you

    10th place is tied between too many favourite to mention.
