PJ Harvey's "Greatest Hits" - Your Ideal...

OK so let's just say if you were in charge of putting together a compilation for PJ which serves as a Greatest Hits package how would you do it?

Rules are it can only be one disc with about 18 tracks maximum. I know the ideal would be a box set of rarities and live recordings but i'm more curious to see what people would choose if it had to be a single disc retrospective album released.

also, if you could pick one PJ pic to serve as the albums cover, which would you choose??

    01. Dress
    02. Sheela-Na-Gig
    03. Rid of Me
    04. 50ft Queenie
    05. Man-Size
    06. Down By The Water
    07. C'mon Billy
    08. Send His Love To Me
    09. Angelene
    10. A Perfect Day Elise
    11. The Sky Lit Up
    12. Good Fortune
    13. A Place Called Home
    14. The Letter
    15. Silence
    16. The Words That Maketh Murder
    17. The Glorious Land
    18. On Battleship Hill

This is off the top of my head, I'm sure more better tracks should be included but it's difficult. I think I just used most of the singles with a couple of non-single tracks. I know others here would choose a better collection than that. I'd like to use this picture I think:

I would guess Polly would be the type of artist that if forced to release a GH would probably select her favorite songs irrespective of single status. So I'm going to do it that way:

    1. To Bring You My Love
    2. Dress
    3. Angelene
    4. The Devil
    5. The Words That Maketh Murder
    6. Big Exit
    7. C'mon Billy
    8. My Beautiful Leah
    9. Shame
    10. Water
    11. Down By The Water
    12. The Last Living Rose
    13. White Chalk
    14. Written on the Forehead
    15. Snake
    16. Is This Desire?
    17. The Desperate Kingdom of Love
    18. Rid of Me

The singles are chosen by Island Records anyway, as part of the contract. I think especially in the case of White Chalk and Let England Shake, PJ would have chosen different singles. (Silence, White Chalk, Last Living Rose)

It's not really single-oriented but I think it's a nice retrospective of her career and features some of her strongest sings.

I think the main issue, in this case, would be how to create a homogeneous sound. I mean, every record has a totally different mixing, and the first two are expecially low-fi and row. I tried myself to make an all comprehensive mixtape, but it's really hard to. By the way, my attempt (imagining a remastering of the whole thing):

Hell and High Water - A Retrospective

    1.rid of me
    2.meet ze monsta
    3.dress
    4.shame
    5.a perfect day elise
    6.the last living rose
    7.white chalk
    8.the garden
    9.oh my lover
    10.the dancer
    11.the devil
    12.words that maketh murder
    13.angelene
    14.down by the water
    15.on battleship hill
    16.a place called home
    17.big exit
    18.to bring you my love

Carey, I like your track sequencing. That'd flow well I think. Nice

    20 tracks, volume adjusted.

    1. Good Fortune
    2. C'mon Billy
    3. Dress
    4. 50ft Queenie
    5. Down By The Water
    6. A Perfect Day Elise
    7. Shame
    8. When Under Ether
    9. Man-Size
    10. A Place Called Home
    11. Angelene
    12. Sheela-Na-Gig
    13. The Glorious Land
    14. That Was My Veil (with John Parish)
    15. Black Hearted Love (with John Parish)
    16. The Words That Maketh Murder
    17. Silence
    18. To Bring You My Love
    19. Big Exit
    20. Rid Of Me

If you want an 18-track version, just cut the Parish tracks. I'd rather not though, as those are great songs.

I could go on at length about why I chose what I did and the track order, but I won't.

^that's pretty cool, 50ft Queenie into Down By the Water is glorious and I love how TBYML rises from the ashes of Silence.

I'll just choose my two favorite per album...

    06. Pocket Knife
    07. Working for the Man
    08. Sheela Na Gig
    09. Man-Size

    14. Henry Lee (w/ Nick Cave)

I know, that's my favorite. She played that segue live and I decided I must use it. I think DBTW all the way through Glorious Land is a real emotional thrill ride too.

Your mix is really interesting, I like Me Jane through Pocket Knife, and I was definitely considering Desperate Kingdom for mine but I didn't have the space for it. If an album like this ever comes along, I'm almost positive PJ would use Desperate Kingdom and/or Shame to represent Uh Huh Her as she seems to be really proud of those. Apparently she hates The Letter.
