just stepping in to say that i've never really appreciated bedtime stories until the past week. everything about this album is extremely refreshing and lush (omg sanctuary!!!!!!!). i've also grown to LOVE the b-side to the "secret" single, "let down your guard". this song is absolutely fascinating, it reminds me of the title track, which seems to be an anomaly in terms of genre-jumping on the album. i really wish it had been placed on here instead of the abysmal "don't stop" (how exactly did that song even make the cut?)

does anybody have any background information on the recording process of this album?

This might be my favorite Madonna record. As a huge 90s hip-hop/rap fan, I think the production and stylistic choices on the record are fantastic. Can't say I dislike a single song.

I don't actively hate anything on Bedtime Stories either and love the feel of the album as a whole, but there are quite a few middle-of-the-road songs on it for me. Only a handful of tracks really impress me. That said, it's still her most underrated album ever.

It's about even with Confessions for me in terms of quality.

It's always been a favorite of mine even though Don't Stop and IRBYL are awful (Your Honesty, Let Down Your Guard and Freedom should have replaced them). In the booklet it is implied she almost went crazy while making this album and she said in interviews there were some problems with the producers and she had to tower over their immaturity, or something.

I'm fairly indifferent to Bedtime Stories as a whole. I think Inside Of Me, Love Tried To Welcome Me and I'd Rather Be Your Lover pull the whole album down in my eyes. I do love Sanctuary and Bedtime Story though. The R&B flavor to the album still puts me off even after all these years and I don't think it is a style that she does particularly well.

I really like that song, and Don't Stop. Didn't know they were controversial.

As a whole cohesive piece, this is one of the better Madonna albums to me.

I like Don't Stop too. It's not one of my favorites on the record, but I think it's a great track.

It basically comes down to that word: love. I guess that's what it's all about.

^ OMG, that part where she reads the bedtime story to the crowd was INTENSE (from around 23:00 to 33:00). I thought she was gonna get up and walk out. She looks seriously pissed off.

I found this quite an interesting read, especially in light of the Bedtime Stories references.

A great article that discusses the artistic references that went into Mark Romanek's video for "Bedtime Story":
