Haven't listen to this album in years, until today.
just... wow. every single second is magic. her voice, the production... pure magic.

she should have listened to this album before recording "Hard Candy". seriously.

^honestly, I think she knows that this is a firm fan favourite and loved even by casual madge fans, and that it's a perfect little album. She did try to recreate it in some ways in MDMA, just without the deeply personal bits.

I really need to stop calling her madge, I sound like an elderly Daily Mail writer

Yeah she probably hates it too. It's a very English thing to do, and I don't think she thinks too fondly of her time in London anymore...

If I remember correctly, she didn't like it even in the early days of her marriage to Guy.

I loved the singles - that beautiful picture for Drowned World/Substitute For Love and some great remixes for Frozen and The Power Of Goodbye (totally trashed by Luke Slater in two parts, lovely lovely lovely)

Madonna just officially uploaded the two remix music videos for "Frozen" on her YouTube account. I love these for all of the bonus footage!

From Volume 27 of ICON Magazine: Quarterly Publication of the Official Madonna Fan Club, Spring 1998:

And here are two wonderful new album anniversary write-ups:

Twenty Years Ago, Madonna Was Reborn in a ‘Ray of Light’
The pop icon’s stunning turn to electronic music showed a spiritual side we’d never seen before and was the last time we learned about her interior life.

To The Heart Of The Nightmare - Madonna’s Ray Of Light 20 Years On
Lucy O’Brien posits that, in the tradition of the 1970s-style concept album, Ray Of Light is Madonna’s Dark Side Of The Moon.

I LOVE these RoL celebration articles. I still remember sitting in my classes with it in my discman, loving the artwork, obsessing over "Skin" and crushing on another boy who also loved Madonna. But we weren't out. Ahh, the 90's.

20 years ago today the album was released in Japan.

A couple of my favorite little promo videos from the era:

    Recording "Skin" in the studio:

    MTV Asia Live Spot Outtakes/Bloopers:

    Another great article:

Revisiting Ray of Light, Madonna’s most forward-thinking album, 20 years on
The singer’s seventh album was the ultimate riposte to ageism and sexism in pop

    http://www.dazeddigital.com/music/ar...20-anniversary

"Ray of Light contains some lyrics that look plain on the page, but feel completely profound when sung by this artist over this music. When Madonna asks, 'Isn’t everyone just travelling down their own road, watching the signs as they go?' on 'Sky Fits Heaven', it’s utterly life-affirming. Listening to 'The Power of Good-Bye' on a gin hangover is never a good idea. Parts of 'Frozen' (like 'you’re frozen when you’re not open') are almost mantra-like. It’s difficult to pinpoint precisely what makes an album transcendent, but on Ray of Light, everything aligns to give you chills whenever you listen to it. It’s simply one of the most breathtaking pop albums of its generation."

I have always loved the artwork for the album. It's not at all obvious for the material, and yet it works so well.
