Thread: Ray of Light

Happy 14th Birthday, Ray of Light, my favorite Madonna album and one of my favorite albums of all time. Everything about this era was perfection in my eyes. The artwork, the videos, the lyrics, the production... a fine album, indeed.

14 years old, the same age I was when I became a fan and bought the album.

    Perfect record, perfect era.

I love how taught and 'holistic' the album feels, very much a unified piece of music but the song writing is so strong it never sags. Even the two I usually skip, Candy Perfume and Shanti, still contribute to the album, I wouldn't say they shouldn't be there. Sky Fits Heaven is delicious.

Impressive that over a year after Frozen hit UK #1, Nothing Really Matters charted at #7 completing ROL's run of 5 top ten singles. She's had other runs like that but not over such a long period, I think.

ETA: Actually that "5 consecutive top 10s from 1 album over more than a year" thing may be a (somewhat tortuous) record. Thriller and Bad had more hits over even longer periods but their 5th singles weren't top 10. There were something like 57 singles from Janet over-stretched over several geological epochs, but mostly charting around 20. *paging menju*

Ooh that's an interesting one - and one I don't know the answer to!

Except that Madonna has actually (almost?) achieved this twice. The five singles from True Blue all went UK Top 10 (Top 5, in fact) between April 1986 and April 1987. The ROL run is a few weeks longer though, you're right.

    Live to Tell - UK #2 - Apr 1986
    Papa Don't Preach - UK #1 - Jun 1986
    True Blue - UK #1 - Oct 1986
    Open Your Heart - UK #4 - Dec 1986
    La Isla Bonita - UK #1 - Apr 1987

    Frozen - UK #1 - released Feb 1998
    Ray of Light - UK #2 - Apr 1998
    Drowned World - UK #10 - Aug 1998
The Power of Goodbye - UK #6 - Nov 1998
    Nothing Really Matters - UK #7 - Mar 1999

Also, "Into the Groove" wasn't on the original Like a Virgin but if you count it, she also had five UK Top 5 hits from that album between November 1984 and November 1985, although that's a bit different because of the soundtrack-only songs "Crazy for You" and "Gambler" charting in between.

In short, Madonna's UK chart career has been pretty phenomenal over a 28-year period, with only "Miles Away" and "Give Me All Your Luvin'" the only ones that stand out as massive flops (comparatively). "Borderline" didn't do well originally (#56) but a year and a half later made it all the way to #2.

Rarely has there been a more fitting album title, especially if you look at it from a current perspective.

other pete and menju, thanks for the info.

I only want to add that Nothing Really Matters in an incredible song, with a video that is just as incredible and, to this day, I never understood the criticism (about the video).

Me neither. Every single video of that era is a masterpiece.

Here's the full MTV Ultrasound that contains the behind the scenes looks at the making of the "Frozen" video and the album itself. This was an AMAZING time to be a fan. I remember 1998-2001 with incredible fondness.

EDIT: Didn't realize this had been posted on page 1 of this thread.

Madonna's performances on Oprah. The full interview aired on 29 May 1998.

Ray of Light's 15th anniversary is upon us!

To begin, "Frozen" turns 15 this month on the 23rd.

A couple of TV performances from the era, both lip-synced:

Audio-only 1998 Rainforest Benefit performance. To my knowledge, this is the only LIVE performance she gave of this song in 1998. Her voice is exceptionally strong here:

Wow, it's now been almost as long from the time Frozen came out until now, as when Frozen came out to the beginning of her career.
