do you guys use alternate tracklists for Scarlet's Walk? Which b-sides and hidden treasures (or scarlet-themed songs from other albums) would you include and why?
I like opening the album with "Wampum Prayer", it sets the tone beautifully. I also include "Tombigbee" and "Seaside" on my mixes. My current edit looks like this:

    01. Wampum Prayer
    02. Amber Waves
    03. Don't Make Me Come to Vegas
    04. A Sorta Fairytale
    05. Tombigbee
    06. Crazy
    07. Seaside
    08. Wednesday
    09. Pancake
    10. I Can't See NY
    11. Taxi Ride
    12. Mrs. Jesus
    13. Virginia
    14. Gold Dust

I love how we all hear Tori's music differently. I love Scarlet very much - but I axe out Wampum. Sorry. I understand the significance, but I think Tori's album version sounds a little lame...

I like the order of Scarlet but would cut Wampum, DMMCTVegas and Your Cloud. They could be B-sides. The rest flows very well for me. No SHT tracks needed... they work as B-sides for me. It is a pretty perfect record though. I would probably cut 3 songs off Pele too to be honest...

    1. Amber Waves
    2. A Sorta Fairytale
    3. Wednesday
    4. Strange
    5. Carbon
    6. Crazy
    7. Sweet Sangria
    8. Pancake
    9. I Can't See New York
    10. Mrs. Jesus
    11. Taxi Ride
    12. Another Girl's Paradise
    13. Scarlet's Walk
    14. Virginia
    15. Gold Dust

Do people generally agree that Another Girl's Paradise is a total gem? I love that song.

I know some are better than others, but I can't imagine cutting anything out of Scarlet. Those last 3 songs always floor me.

I admit that I don't LOOOOOVE SW, but it is a very good album and I'd love to have another album by her like this one in terms of production and songwriting. Said that:

    1- Amber waves
    2- A sorta fairytale
    3- Wednesday
    4- Strange
    5- Carbon
    6- Sweet Sangria
    7- Your cloud
    8- Pancake
    9- I can't see New York
    10- Indian summer
    11- Mrs. Jesus
    12- Taxi ride
    13- Another girl's paradise
    14- Scarlet's walk

I'd love to add Tombigbee, Mountain, Operation Peter Pan, Seaside and Angels, but I have to think where's the place for them. Indian summer belong right next to ICSNY, mainly because of the Bush reference. And I would add like two seconds of silence after that before Mrs. Jesus, like a pause to continue that you take to continue with the story.

My problem with "Indian Summer" is that it would make for a perfect closing track, had she not already put "Gold Dust" in that place. "Gold Dust" is too brilliant to replace.

Yeah, I love Indian Summer - I used to hate it, but there's something about the playing, it's a style I can't really compare to any of her other music - expansive with sustain, like maybe it comes closest to something like Beulah Land in a way. With Scarlet it's a shame that there are so many great tracks but it's perfect in its released form. The only thing I would maybe change on Indian Summer is the My. Bush line - not even because it dates the song, but more because I feel the request is too impossible, he ain't never gonna light the sage. I think she could have name checked someone else in there who was an ally more than an enemy and had the same effect.

I'm loving your selections and I agree about Indian Summer: it's the perfect closer, but Gold Dust is even more perfect, so it's very hard to place it somewhere in the album. It's funny how all of you subtracted some songs, while I added even more, because I never get tired of this album and I always want more. I was thinking about making it two albums, or even three shorter albums, but for now that's my rearranged tracklist:

    1- wampum prayer
    2- amber waves
    3- a sorta fairytale
    4- wednesday
    5- strange
    6- crazy
    7- tombigbee
    8- your cloud
    9- indian summer
    10- taxi ride
    11- angels
    12- sangria
    13- pancake
14- don't make me come to vegas
    15- carbon
    16- seaside
    17- i can't see ny
    18- mrs jesus
    19- operation peter pan
    20- another girl's paradise
21- mountain (hate how bad is the sound compared to the other tracks, but still!)
    22- scarlet's walk
    23- virginia
    24- ruby
    25- gold dust

I left out apollo's frock because it just doesn't belong to this album, and bug a martini because I had no idea where to place it (maybe between pancake and vegas).

As cover image, I use the promo picture of scarlet's selections, the one with the body map.

I still don't like the first half of the album's sequencing -- too many ballads, that sleepy section of Crazy/Wampum/Vegas, and Amber Waves as an opener? No thanks. My edits are always a little different, but I usually put more of the confrontational songs in the beginning, and Amber I always associate as an encore/near-the-end track, thanks to WTSF.

    01 Wampum Prayer
    02 Scarlet's Walk
    03 Tombigbee
    04 Strange
    05 A Sorta Fairytale
    06 Carbon
    07 Your Cloud
    08 Wednesday
09 Don't Make Me Come To Vegas
    10 Sweet Sangria
    11 Crazy

(I guess this would need to be 2 discs)

    01 Pancake
    02 I Can't See New York
    03 Mrs. Jesus
    04 Taxi Ride
    05 Indian Summer
    06 Another Girl's Paradise
    07 Mountain
    08 Virginia
    09 Amber Waves
    10 Gold Dust

For years I've been trying to find out why only some song titles on Scarlet's Walk are capitalised. Is this a random typographic decision or is there more to it?

I agree with Kala. That last sequence of songs is EVERYTHING!

Agreed. This is the strongest sequence of songs Tori has ever recorded, I would suggest, rivalled only by Marianne/Sneeze/Muhammad/Jupiter

I believe because on the Scarlet Stories CD and in other interviews Tori describes many of the songs as characters / people. These include Amber, Carbon, Crazy, Sweet Sangria and Virginia. It is kind of confusing and bizarre Tori speak...

Amber Waves - Scarlet’s Walk begins on the West Coast, where she visits AMBER WAVES, a phrase found in America the Beautiful and also the name of a porn star in the movie Boogie Nights. Amber’s in trouble. "She had arrived in the city of angels with a dream of being someone".
Wednesday - "Scarlet moves on to take other lovers. In WEDNESDAY she’s in a relationship with a man who harbours secrets“. Maybe Wednesday is the mans name in addition to being a day of the week?
Carbon - "Next she meets up with the manic depressive Carbon"
Crazy - At this point a character called CRAZY comes into Scarlet’s life. “He makes a lot of sense and seems to take the pain away for a while so she follows him. “He’s seductive and dangerous and its delicious..."
Sweet Sangria - "Balmy days, sweet Sangria, She's been gone, have you seen her? Senorita shyly turning away Leaving me our fading flame" Sangria is the senorita who is gone...
I can't see NY - It is a city, so capitalized.
Taxi Ride - "Taxi is for Kevyn" - maybe it is capitlized as a kind of codename for Kevyn?
Scarlet's Walk - Scarlet being the main character and title of the album.
Virginia - "But in Virginia, you know, she’s a young girl".
