Thanks for all your help Ryan, imo the definitive version is this currently, the "motes of sand" verse and a couple of other parts still needs work but in every other sense I think this version is spot on. I've suggested some of your ideas to andrew and hopefully we can get this to a final stage.

One thing I think we're all still struggling with is the "this arid world/the severing world/the sirring whirl" bit. I mean I can't make sense of it at all. "This arid world" sort of sounds okay, even though she doesn't make a d sound at all, but contextually makes no sense whatsoever.

I think it makes a lot of sense. He's a diver, he's comfortable in the water. It's a common theme in Joanna's songs, people who are out of their element (particularly water, as in Colleen) find it hard to cope. The real world, as in outside of the ocean, must seem arid to the character.

And while this may not make sense, I hear "the ringing of the pail" as in the shellfish are collected in buckets and the ringing is the noise made while carrying the buckets.

Thursday will be the three year anniversary of this song's debut. And here we thought it meant a new album was coming soon.

I revisit this song a lot. It's one of my favorite things she's written to date. I hope we hear something this year!
