Guys, I need help. I updated my phone (I had to - my battery was draining overnight and usually when it's that fucked up, an update fixes it. I already had TWO days where my alarm didn't go off because the battery was too dead and it was full charged when I went to bed) and the new podcast interface for iphone sucks.

I lost my books a couple weeks ago and now I can't use this useless podcast mess. Anyone have any good podcast app recommendations? My one need is to be able to have AN EASY TO USE play next/queue feature. Sometimes I change my mind what I want to listen to next and I want to rearrange them, but I want it to automatically go to the next one in my queue without manually playing when my queue is set up fine. I listen while I drive a lot. I don't want to be fiddling with it.

I can't figure out how to "play next" now. It's a fucking ugly interface, like how they fucked up the music and now THAT is also nearly unusable. Hi, why would I want a gd skip button? I am in the mood for every song in every playlist at every moment in time? FUCK YOU APPLE.

I hate the podcast app, can't use the iBooks app unless you purchase from apple, hate the music player. I never use facetime, I hate the stupid earbud/charging port bullshit... so I think I might have to switch out of apple entirely.

So if anyone can suggest something, I'd be super grateful.

I have an android and I use an app called MaterialPlayer, and it's the most simple audiobook app I could find. There's no rss feed so Isually just add downloaded podcasts there - as it's also not my primary listening device (I still use an old ipod to that, because it's small and also the battery lasts for days, but I agree, iTunes sucks).
I don't think there's version for iOS. I did however find it here, and maybe there's something there for you :

The podcast app I’ve used forever is called Podcruncher, but there is one little glitch on it with the search function that they just don’t fix. I love all the organization features so I just manage to live with that one little glitch.

The one app I’ve heard is really great is called Downcast, but it’s $3. So if you don’t mind spending the money I’d try that one.

Edited to add: forgot to mention that the podcruncher app does do all the things you want. You can make your own playlist and set up to play the next in queue. Just that one annoying glitch may turn you off.

Yeah, I can't fiddle with trying to get an android on an apple. Thanks, though.

Podcruncher is $3 too! Which I totally don't mind paying AFTER I try it out. I just spent a bunch on an iBook replacement (Mapleread was my choice, anyone who is looking to switch. I had weirdly specific needs and it's the only one that did what I wanted it to do).

I'm thinking of trying Overcast. It's free with ads and a pay-subscription mode. I just want to try something first because I went through a dozen ebook apps till I found one that displayed my books properly. The point of buying apple products is that they just work, right? But when everything has an ugly and un-intuitive and dysfunctional interface, it literally doesn't "just work."

eta: as I'm resubscribing to all my podcasts, I noticed iTunes unsubscribed me from some again.

Sorry, couldn’t remember how much podcruncher was since I bought it several years ago.

Oh no worries. It’s so weird when there’s no free trial version. It might be better than outcast but it gets expensive testing. I don’t mind paying when I know it’s right.

For any My Dad Wrote a Porno fans still around, they released one of their lives shows as an HBO special. It was kind of weird putting faces with names. James and Alice looked close to how they sound but Jamie didn't.

It was pretty good. Not their best and clearly it was one they'd done before, but it was entertaining and a nice change from just audio.

I love MDWAP but the live show didn't do it for me. Alice and James were hilarious as always, but Jamie came off awkward and "performance"-ish in a live setting. Also, it left me with questions. 1. If they read an unreleased chapter every live show, then is it this same one? And if so, that means their reactions aren't genuine and spontaneous. 2. If they read a different "unreleased" chapter every live show, that fuels my fears that Rocky isn't real and all these "books" are written by comedy writers. It even bothers me to think that Rocky might be real and is now just writing to be funny rather than from a genuine place. Either one of these options messes with my enjoyment of it, so I'll just have to try not to think about it.

That was DEFINITELY done before. They had the nut and the anatomy chart. And the whole thing when James went into the audience. And it was fine because it was the first time I watched it, but yeah... it gave me questions.

Jamie gets so embarrassed when they talk about the real Rocky. I believe he is real and did write stuff. But I don't know how much I believe that the three of them are going in to every episode completely unspoiled. And even if it was all a put on, I still enjoy it.

FWIW, I went to a live MDWAP show and based on the reviews I've seen, they do indeed do the same chapter at all their live shows, much like comedians who generally tour the same set for months. I haven't watched the special yet because it's not on tv here until tonight, so I don't know how it translates to screen. I can tell you that in person, it is an absolute scream. There is something really special about being in a room full of people cackling at dad smut. And again, in person, the three of them are very relaxed on stage but I wouldn't be surprised if filming the show effected their performance a bit (much like *certain* other performers we know), especially since only Alice does on-camera tv stuff AFAIK.

As for Rocky, I can't imagine that he isn't real. The next book is the first one written post-podcast so if it has an influence on him, this will be the first opportunity to find out how.

    Highly recommend both Song Exploder
and This Song (KUTX). Song Exploder deconstructs a specific song by an artist through interviews and early demos, etc. ..the recent episode about Sharon Van Etten’s Seventeen was fantastic: http://songexploder.net/sharon-van-etten

This Song is a different approach to dissecting songs..each episode the artist being interviewed discusses a song or songs by another artist that’s influenced them in some way. It usually ends up being a springboard for a larger conversation about their own work. My favorite so far is the recent episode with a Jenny Lewis discussing Govinda Jai Jai by Alice Coltrane and what it means to her is really beautiful: http://kutx.org/this-song/this-song-...alice-coltrane

Amanda Palmer was a recent guest discussing Nick Cave, and St. Vincent did one where she talked about her love for early Disney songs.

I've been listening to Gilbert Gottfried's Amazing Colossal Podcast at work lately. Gilbert and his sidekick are huge movie buffs and if you're interested in Old Hollywood and nostalgia for the 60s/70s golden age of film, you'll love it. They have great, somewhat forgotten guests like Lee Grant and Peter Bogdanovich and Diane Ladd and Gilbert gets juicy stories out of them. It's also a great way for a millennial like myself to discover movies I've never heard of.

For any US version of The Office fans, The Office Ladies debuted today with Angela and Jenna (Angela and Pam). They are super cute together and talk about one episode per podcast (man, that is a legacy title...) in order. They have really funny and sweet behind the scenes tidbits. It just made me so happy since everything else I listen to is like terrible politics/news, terrible history, or hardcore british porn.
