How can someone who's a publicist for Drag City not like Joanna?? That is CONFUSING.

And good way to challenge her! "I like females who are just doing it" - ????

If composing and recording a 2 hour-long narrative-driven harp-centric album featuring lyrics referencing everything from Dick Turpin to Bluebeard and Lola Montez doesn't constitute 'doing it', then I give up on life.

Ha! I know, right? She was drunk, we all were. But a friend and i joked about that all weekend because she said she didn't like women who were on Goddess pedestals, but when asked who she admired, she said PJ, Courtney...Umh. Courtney Love isn't on a pedestal? She's the widow of kurt Cobain and one of the most famous musicians alive. So my friend would say " You know who's not on a pedestal?" and I would answer " Patti Smith" or someone else so clearly revered.

God, I hope she doesn't come across this thread. I love her. It was just a funny moment.

Are there any more Joanna shows coming up besides the Pitchfork Festival in July? If a new album is done, I'd bet there'll be some new stuff played and maybe she'll make a comment or two on when new material will be out.

I don't knooowwwww. As of now, no other shows. It's killing me not to have any news, but she's always kept her album releases pretty tightly guarded until she's ready. SIGH.

Did we know much about HOOM before its release? That's around the time I started exploring her music and fell in love with everything.

Not really. She released '81, Good Intentions and Kingfisher very very shortly before the record came out.

The first hint of it was this cartoon, right? In January of that year?

I think it was released 5-6 weeks before the album came out. After the cartoon, as I remember, those three songs were posted on Drag City, but there was never much in the way of promotion leading up to the release.

I love the way they did it with that cartoon strip and then you're right, the album came out at the end of the following month. I thought it was just right.

That cartoon strip takes on so many new levels of meaning when you view it after listening to the album for 3 years...
