I have used avast! for quite a long time, and I think it's very effective.
My McAfee expired last week. I hate McAfee but someone bought it for me so I figured I use it.
But what is the best? I just want something I can download, possibly for free or close to it? :/

I like malwarebyes for PCs: http://www.malwarebytes.org/pro/
$25 = lifetime access. Even before I got PRO, it was the free version scans that saved my old computer a couple times when my so-called virus protection did nothing.

I use ESET NOD32. I think their personal Antivirus is like $20 or $30 a year. It's a small, unobtrusive program and does a good job of catching vulnerabilities in emails and websites in real-time. I like that it's not bloatware like Norton/Symantec/McAfee are.
^ fuckin hate "bloatware", slows down the computer and barely does its job.
however... $25 for lifetime access? I think we have a winner!
Yes, but Malwarebytes is not anti-virus software. It is designed to catch malware and spyware. It should be used in conjunction with antivirus software, as they are each designed to catch things the other misses. From their FAQ:

I also use Malwarebytes and Ad-aware in addition to my regular virus software.Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is not meant to be a replacement for antivirus software. Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is a complementary but essential program which detects and removes zero-day malware and "Malware in the Wild". This includes malicious programs and files, such as virus droppers, worms, trojans, rootkits, dialers, spyware, and rogue applications that many antivirus programs do not detect or cannot fully remove. That being said, there are many infections that Malwarebytes Anti-Malware does not detect or remove which any antivirus software will, such as file infectors. It is important to note that Malwarebytes Anti-Malware works well and should run alongside antivirus software without conflicts. In some rare instances, exclusions may need to be set for your specific antivirus product to achieve the best possible system performance.
This is what we use, and my man's an IT dude and shizz. All of these are free.
AVG - Antivirus
Ad-Aware - Antivirus, antispyware, antimalware, download protection
CCleaner - Cleaning tool
Defraggler - Defrag individual files and folders, not just the whole computer
Maximum protection and computer clean-up, zero dollars spent.
OK thanks guys, both of you now win.
What a handy list, Autumn, I think I will get all of those.
