I am waiting for her to update the title track like she did with Parasol a couple years back.

I still wish the "Vicar's Wife" portion was its own separate track.

Can she ever pull off the rest of the song live? It's kind of like Witness in that the backing vocals are practically half the song. Plus, if she doesn't hit those notes on "will you pray for me", then it's not even worth it!!! Although I would be interested in hearing the choir come back for a show, and join her on this.

I don't think she can hit those notes (at least not reliably, or without damaging her voice) but I remain optimistic that she could come up with some reworking of the song that would make it great in a live context even without them. With a choir? THAT WOULD BE AMAZING!!!

That and Datura are the two songs that she has most criminally under-represented live to me.

The Vicar's Wife doesn't deserve that tacky incongruous campfest tacked on the front of it.

Alone, I think it's the best thing she's done in many years.

    That was way harsh, Tai.

Yes. So I could delete/skip it easily.

If by "best" you mean "dullest" then you'd be right. It boggles the mind why some love this improv so much. Just beacuse it's solo piano doesn't mean it's good. Weatherman and Oysters are great, not the Vicar's Wife, which sounds like something Tori could compose in her sleep.
leave them troubled boys all behind

You've this really interesting tinge of disgust with everything you post. From one opinionated bastard to another... maybe try loosening up on that, dude.

Also, totally love those two sections together. Can't imagine them on a record separated. Live, sure, whatever.

I was talking about the album version's first part which I really can't abide. If only she would give the full thing a go live, especially with choir/real instruments - it might convince me that UG/TVW actually fit together...

I decided to turn this on tonight on my way home. I actually can honestly say that I love this album. There are a few dodgy bits but overall it's my favorite since Scarlet. Easily.

I actually like Promise well enough on its own, but it and Giant's Rolling Pin back-to-back are my second biggest problem with the album (right behind the cheap-ass demo-ness of the non-solo tracks). They don't flow for me at all, while the rest of the album is her most tonally and sonically consistent since Scarlet. Whatever overall "mood" the album has for me kind of gets killed in the middle there.

I agree. I skip Promise and GRP when I'm listening to the album and I put Promise on the bside listening if I decide to listen to those after. It works.

I don't really get the fuss over the Vicar's Wife section either. Her voice sounds like 90's Tori which is great, but aside from that I don't think it's anything exceptional. Maybe I'm just tired of the whole Marys thing.

After a couple of years with the album, my revised tracklist would be:

    1. America
    2. Trouble's Lament
    3. Wild Way
    4. Wedding Day
    5. Weatherman
    6. 16 Shades of Blue
    7. Promise
    8. Selkie
    9. Oysters
    10. Unrepentant Geraldines
    11. Forest of Glass
    12. Invisible Boy

    B-Sides:
    Maids
    Giant's Rolling Pin
    White Telephone
    Rose Dover
    Dixie
