I love me some Austen. Read them all. Multiple times. But it doesn't exactly make them more likable because the time period of all the settings is pretty white and male-dominated. Of COURSE they're going to like the world she presents: they're on top.

Well, this was bound to happen.

Friday night’s production of the controversial Julius Caeser that depicts President Trump‘s assassination was halted when a pro-Trump protester walked onstage and began shouting down the actors.

Laura Loomer, who documented the entire ordeal via Periscope, stormed the stage and shouted “Stop the normalization of political violence!” and accused the actors of “promoting violence against the right.”

She was quickly escorted off the stage by security and was arrested by the police. She was charged with trespassing and disorderly conduct, but was let go not long after.
Has anyone been following this story? I've been kind of obsessed with it, because it's such a perfect example of Trump-era ignorance. The Trumpies insist that it glorifies violence against Trump. But anyone who knows this play knows that it's a WARNING against political violence. I mean, after Ceasar is killed, Rome falls to shit and all the conspirators die. DUH.

Oh, and Ms. Loomer appears to be a former member of Project Veritas. And yes, her Gofundme page is already up. Three cheers for the Right Wing Grift!

Anyone else have anything to say on this story? If you just find it too depressing to comment on, I understand.
At my core, I think we're gonna be OK.

I like how they keep screaming stuff like "If it was done as Obama as Ceasar (sic), librul (sic) snowflakes would of (sic) lost there (sic) minds." And ignoring the many people who pointed out it was done that way and no one flipped out.

Then that Probiotic guy (not his real name, but someone else called him that and I'm sticking with it) is going to stage some sort of witch hunt with Hillary as the main character... The Crucible? Another very old play he doesn't understand the point of? Doubly when you factor in its allegory to McCarthy.

Ugh. It's so bizarre. My favorite take was

They broadcast their ignorance and are so unaware of it. They think they are boasting, which makes it all the more tragic.

Oh, yeah, the 2012 Guthrie production with an Obama Ceasar. When you bring that up, the righties either run away or accuse you of lying.

I think the US is trying to have conversation about what acceptable speech is. It's not rocket science that they're piggy-backing on liberals expressing so much rage over Bernie Sanders and his supporters. Of course, even the Scalise shooting, many in the center see this as problem with the Left. NPR points out that the "violent" Left is a probably overdone stereotype. But there's is a definite conversation going on about what sort of rhetoric or speech is acceptable. Oathkeepers have taken to forcibly throwing out Nazis from their events, because they don't like white nationalist rhetoric. This is interesting because Oathkeepers are at the head of the "rational debate" club-- at least they were.

But it's a conversation we're all having. Antifa thinks white power rhetoric is harmful and should be shut down. Moderates and conservatives think antifa is too radical and should be shut down (or at least shut up). Some conservatives and the far-right thinks that anyone who criticizes Trump needs to be shut down (or shut up), because the speech is violent or encourages violence. Many Democrats thought Sanders' speech patterns encouraged violence. Stalinists think that anyone who doesn't support Putin is racist and must be shut down, and they still oppose Trump. There are over 200 people facing life sentences for the Inauguration protests, even though it's clear that only couple a people committed property destruction, and the most egregious forms of property destruction happened after they were all arrested. This includes a journalist who did nothing but film the event.

This is where we are at.

I don't think we're having a national conversation (though we SHOULD). They're not talking. They're acting like spoiled petulant children, unable to discern nuance and context. They're ignorant and stubborn and by saying so I'm elitist and condescending. FOX news and people like Trump have validated terrible opinions and given them worth and value.

And it's not a free speech matter with regard to the play. The company has every right to put it on. These morons also have EVERY right to be outraged, even to protest. They don't have the right to disrupt it, nor to send death threats to literally every Shakespeare company in the entire country. They have every right to put on their own play (it's not even under copyright!), to criticize, to boycott. But they are not after justice or peace. Their one goal since we had the audacity to elect a black guy is to make liberals pay.

They're certainly having a conversation. They're trying to tone police the Left and they have been for a long time. They think #blacklivesmatter is too negative and anti-white and anti-cop. They think that criticizing police creates the environment for people to hate police and eventually kill them. They believe that calling Republicans racist only makes people hate the GOP and promotes violence against them. Suggesting that there is a war on women or that opposing abortion is sexist make the GOP look like monsters and is basically hate speech against them. They want people to stop calling them stupid or rednecks or inbreds or homophobes. They want people to stop suggesting they hate the poor or are "gun nuts." In their opinion, the violent Left begins in its rhetoric of hate. They want the Left to stop calling them names. And to top it off, they want the Left to stop calling them out when they say something insensitive or not PC as it's hateful, mean-spirited, and dehumanizing.

So they're totally having this conversation and have been for a long time. They just believe that we are at fault.

So this is fun and weird. Conservatives have taken to calling anything they don't like "antifa." Of course being anti-antifa is a double negative that equals fa, but okay.

Well, it's like when they call someone like Hillary Clinton "communist". "Antifa" is just the new thing.
