I would shove some SOHN on there as I've listened to it a great deal over the past few months, but I realise he's not everyone's cup of tea.

    A great list, Octopussy.

I feel like Nadine Shah, Bishop Briggs, Dawn Richard, Briana Marela, Katie Von Schleicher and Julien Baker would fit in there pretty nicely. Some recommended songs to start with:

Nadine Shah - "Evil" and "Yes Men"
    Bishop Briggs - "Wild Horses"
    Dawn Richard - "The Louvre"
Briana Marela - "Give Me Your Love"
Katie Von Schleicher - "Going Down"
    Julien Baker - "Appointments"

Also guys, I think Zola Jesus may have just stolen Album of the Year for me. She came for Lorde and Vince Staples with a knife between her teeth and a shank in her fist. Okovi a masterpiece - that run from "Doma" to "Siphon" is the strongest song sequencing I've heard all year and each song is just breathtakingly beautiful or skull-crushing. "Remains" sounds like a pop banger generated by a neural network. "Half-Life" just wallows in beauty. There are so many little bits to love, like the way her pronunciation twists on "find you" in "Veka" or the half-buried "hah!" in the final chorus of "Soak". It's dark and gorgeous and thoughtful and visceral and a complete culmination of everything Zola Jesus has done before - from the claustrophobic shifting noises in "Ash to Bone" to the pop-influenced momentum of "Remains" to the stateliness of the string arrangements - and it's just stunning.

I totally forgot Ahnoni released something earlier this year. I have Paradise on my 2017 songs list, not the final one but the one were I put all the songs I find interesting at one point or another that came out this year - it's getting pretty long and unmanageable

    New Margo Price song y'all!

Margo Price – A Little Pain
Maybe for once, someone will call me "Sir" without adding, "You're making a scene."

Thank you for the suggestions, really digging Nadine Shah atm.

I also love that you put Drake and Jidenna on your list... that stuff is so easy to like, I don't know why anyone bothers to resist.

Right? I used to have shame but now like fuck it, Drake brings the fat yams.

Still a little ashamed I included Halsey but that one song off her album is listenable and even a bop.

I'm in love with the new album by Emily Haines of Metric.

She also did a performance for CBC Music featuring some of the songs.

So possibly my most exciting diamond in the rough this year is Tomberlin and her debut album At Weddings, a sparse, melancholy, gentle collection of songs like sunlight filtering into an old attic. I couldn't find any embeddable streams or videos but you can stream it here. She's sort of like if Julien Baker and Grouper cross-pollinated, and Owen Pallett served as producer.

I have a new album coming out September 29th!
It's called Dreams and Daggers. You can pre-order it here.

It was recorded in part at The Village Vanguard (mainly Sunday's set) with Aaron Diehl, Paul Sikivie, and Lawrence Leathers. We also recorded a few tracks in studio, with the Catalyst Quartet (featuring arrangements and compositions by Paul Sikivie). It was a lot of fun to make and I can't wait to share it with you.
