album of the year: black marble - it's immaterial

take a nostalgic trip back to the eighties with the latest evolution of coldwave featuring heavy reverb on male vox over intricate synth-laden tracks.

whereas black marble's critically-acclaimed debut album a different arrangement is fully drenched in its grimy east coast sound, it's immaterial sees frontman chris stewart move to the west coast and as such the music is a marriage of light and dark. shimmering synths radiate over the hazy summer pop of "golden heart" and "a million billion stars" is a sparse dirge looking for the light at the end of the tunnel.

while the eighties are still alive in many ways, it generally comes off as an afterthought with a lazy production choice. in this love letter to the decade, the music speaks for itself in its authenticity. from the frantic strung out ambience of instrumental opener "interdiction" to synths dripping like rain in modern classic closing track "collene," which would sound right at home in a john hughes movie, every second comes from the heart on this retro sonic voyage. buckle up and enjoy the ride.

best tracks: golden heart, iron lung, woods

and the rest of the best:

    poliça - united crushers
    sales - sales
    navvi - omni
    nite jewel - liquid cool
    beverly - the blue swell
    hydrogen sea - in dreams
    puro instinct - autodrama
    roosevelt - roosevelt
    porches - pool

I have one that I never posted. I'll put it up when I get a new computer. It may be aa few weeks, or a few months.
At my core, I think we're gonna be OK.

I did not do a list.

Stand by Swet Shop Boys as my 2016 #1, though.
