I think there are some influences of southern music, even bluegrass (minus the banjos) in Cloud Riders, Wildwood, Climb, and Bats.

Can't say I really loved this album, but there's some beautiful songs on here and some good ideas. I absolutely love Wildwood, Climb, Up The Creek and Reindeer King. The rest just didn't really grab me.

oops, I'd actually love that. I'm really going through a folk phase rn but I can imagine all these appalachian folk instruments (dulcimer PLEASE) and smoky soundscapes with stories about her grandfather growing up. ooooh lord i want it.

Oh yes, dulcimer. What a beautiful instrument, I'd love to hear that.

Just bought one. Thinking of adapting some Tori songs and doing covers! Right now I'm learning some joni mitchell.

Can't believe it's been 2 years (and a couple days) since this came out. Definitely has staying power at this point; still can't get over Reindeer King and Mary's Eyes and the rest of it still stands strong as well.

Yep, it hasn't left my cd player in my car in two years (6 disc player, obvs, I don't love it that much).

When it came out, I had a handful of favorites (Bang, Cloud Riders, Climb) but at least half the album didn't hit my ears right. Two years later, I revisited it and find it rich and beautiful as a whole. Now I feel like a have a new album to explore.

Been listening to the album today.
My goodness, "Broken Arrow" is so damaged by the wailing guitar throughout the song.

    I love the porn guitar.
I have been imagining how the album would have sounded with different arrangements though. The guitar in Bang during the "so bright it blinded me" almost sounds like harpichord and I can imagine that would have worked well there.

I LOVE the porn guitar on Broken, and generally, WHY IS THAT SONG NOT SO MUCH MORE APPRECIATED?!

It's really well written, and I love it. Everything about it really.

Personally, i think the track would have been better if Marks guitar didn't come in as early...so it would build up at the beginning and then be introduced...i think people don't like it as it is perhaps too prominent throughout.....also, i sometimes wish Tori would really let rip with the organ on certain tracks...imo the organ always sounds a bit too polished and i yearn for those organ sounds you'd hear on sixties songs when they were really expressive and bubbling almost.....just my opinion of course but otherwise i do quite like Broken Arrow in general.

^That's how I feel about it, also. I don't mind the porn guitar but having it come in later, and maybe even lay out for a bit, would have been much better than it being some droning constant from the very beginning.

The verses of Broken Arrow are fine. The chorus is so milquetoast I can't get past it.

Broken Arrow is the only one I question from this album. I don't like the porn guitar. I hate the basic beats in the first 3/4. I do like how Tori sounds stoned in the chorus, and the backing vocals, and everything about the coda.

The rest of the album is as close to perfect as you could hope for at this point. Wildwood is in my all time top 10 now. Bats is a gem too, I think it achieves that "mystical ocean witch" sound just as well as Siren and Liquid Diamonds even. I'm really moved by Chocolate Song and Wings and those are the two that strike me as the most underrated. Nothing more needs to be said about Reindeer King, Breakaway, Climb and Mary's Eyes... they're literally as good as anything from Earthquakes/Pink/Pele.
