    Chocolate Song

    Needs its own thread!

The last minute of this is especially lovely. Does anyone know what the lyrics are that she sings that are not in the lyric book? Something about fire and water?

    Lyrics:

I don't have to like the things you say sometimes
Then I don't like the things I say
Now vows and consonants our weaponry
    We vowed to love eternally

And I hear your pain screaming
    And I hear your pain
    In the silent evenings
    We used to be happy
    We used to make happy
    On the stove
    On our own

    Satiny luscious chocolate
    I don't hate you
    I don't hate you
    Satiny luscious chocolate
No, I need to be more like you
    Satiny luscious chocolate
Within the tension of your opposites
    Satiny luscious chocolate
    Somehow the lingering sweetness
    Satiny luscious chocolate
    Without betraying your bitterness
    Satiny luscious chocolate
    I don't hate you
    I don't hate you
    Satiny luscious chocolate

I don't have to like swinging from extremes
The lows so low, the highs so high
From throwing knives to dessert stirring
Our tight rope act just balancing

And I hear your pain screaming at me
    Hear your pain screaming
    We used, used to be
    We used to make happy
We used to make, make happy

    Satiny luscious chocolate
    I don't hate you
    I don't hate you
    Satiny luscious chocolate
No, I need to be more like you
    Satiny luscious chocolate
Within the tension of your opposites
    Satiny luscious chocolate
    Somehow the lingering sweetness
    Satiny luscious chocolate
    Without betraying your bitterness
    Satiny luscious chocolate
    I don't hate you
    I don't hate you
    Satiny luscious chocolate
    I don't hate you
    I don't hate you

    Hear your pain screaming
    We used to make happy
We used to make, make happy
In a cauldron on our stove

We used to make, make happy
    We used to make happy

I'm having a hard time with the "satiny luscious chocolate" part.

I didn't like this one at first, but it's a real ear worm and has been stuck in my head all day. It's really growing on me.

I don't love the word satiny but other than that this is fast climbing the ranks for me. It's very close to home and sums up what's going on in my marriage very closely. I think it's a beautifully crafted song. I can't quite make out the lyrics at the end either, maybe "Fair fire, sweet water"?

Wait so it's "stove" not stairs??? This changes things a bit cuz I thought she and Mark were "making happy on the stairs" (LORDY)

I'm still hearing this as a sort of "remember the good times" type of song. "We used to be happy" hits me hard in the feels. I love it even more now, that image of making hot chocolate with someone is going to stick with me, and already reminds me of an ex-roommate who I ended up fighting with quite a bit before we moved out.

I like this one so much! It grabbed my attention from the very first time I listened to the album. Its title is definitely misleading, making you think it's a funny/playful song, but it's really anything but; it's definitely a song that laments the lack of connection in a long term relationship/marriage, the fights that obscure the many happy moments that they experienced. The ''satiny luscious chocolate'' sounds almost cringe-worthy in paper, but I love it in the context of the song - how making this lovely chocolate was their ''happy place'' and how she misses those times. I love the emotion in her voice, she sounds so tired and sad when she sings ''we used to make happy''.

I too hear ''Fair fire, sweet water'' in the last minute - which could be a reference of course to the fire needed to warm up the chocolate and the water needed to add to it so that it's nice and smooth, but it could also be a reference to their elements: fire for Tori and water for Mark. Would be nice indeed if it was so

I like that it stands in the tradition of "Doughnut Song" promises something much more sweeter than what the song actually offers.

I don't hate this song at all. It embraces the predictable chord structure and makes something cute. The lyrics are atrocious, but Tori goes in face first and offers zero f***s. It probably belongs on TBK, but amid the other songs on NI it offers a kind of silly release. Especially before the heaviness of Bang.

Making happy on the stove isn't much better! Sounds painful tbh.

Chocolate Song grew so fast on me. Cause it is so incredibly sad. And changes between these cold verses and the warm chorus, when she remembers the chocolate.

Tori's newly revamped website describes Chocolate Song like this: On its close backdrop of vintage electronica, this is a song of pure impressionistic flair.

Same. It's sung in that same cutesy voice as "I'm off to find a giant's rolling pin" and I absolutely hate it. I've played this twice and I won't play it again, much like GRP (and Harps of Gold, and... oh dear, too many to count at this point).
