    Depression playlist

Hi all! I am looking to make a depression playlist. I am not looking for down tempo songs or songs about depression following a break-up or losing a love one. I'd like to start it off with "fell on black days."

That's practically a party song compared to this list:

    Lycia - Drifting
    Slowdive - Sing
    Swans - Blind
    Goldfrapp - Horse Tears

I can't even listen to this song. It utterly destroys me.

But maybe too much illumination at the end?

The Riverbed by Owen Pallett is probably my favorite song specifically about depression.

    Anything by Julien Baker:

I'm only ever screaming at myself in public,
I know I shouldn't act this way in public
I know I shouldn't make my friends all worry when I go out at night
And grind my teeth like sutures, my mouth like a wound
When I stay up and throw my voice about you
Or less about you and more about how I ruin everything I think could be good news

    Phoebe Bridgers - "Funeral"

last night I blacked out in my car and woke up in my childhood bed
wishing I was someone else and feeling sorry for myself
when I remembered someone's kid is dead
Jesus Christ, I'm so blue all the time
And that's just how I feel, always have and I always will

Leonard Cohen - "Dress Rehearsal Rag"

Now if you can manage to get your trembling fingers to behave,
Why don't you try unwrapping a stainless steel razor blade?
That's right, it's come to this, yes it's come to this,
And wasn't it a long way down,
Wasn't it a strange way down?

This song kills me. Read the comments section - one man wrote that the lyrics were his wife's public suicide note.

The narrative that plays out in this song absolutely guts me; it's so heart breaking and beautiful. Ps Edie Brickell is criminally underappreciated as a songwriter and performer. This whole album "Volcano" is unbelievably good.

My personal conspiracy is that Sufjan didn't include this on Carrie & Lowell because, for as personal as that record is, this was just too close to the bone, too real:

Lyrically, this is about as dark as it gets - the line "things are gonna slide in all directions, won't be nothing you can measure anymore" is almost unbearable in its prescience given our modern American political situation:

"Take your fast car and keep on driving..." Pretty much says it all.

Thank you for the songs! I am going to listening to them today!

This song is slower than what I am going for, but I LOVE it!

    Rilo Kiley - A Better Son/Daughter

    And sometimes when you’re on
    You’re really fucking on
And your friends they sing along
    And they love you
But the lows are so extreme
That the good seems fucking cheap
And it teases you for weeks in its absence
But you’ll fight and you’ll make it through
You’ll fake it if you have to
And you’ll show up for work with a smile
Maybe for once, someone will call me "Sir" without adding, "You're making a scene."

This one and "Wise up" are the most "there's not way out, I give up" songs I can think of.
When he woke up, the dinosaur was still there.

No "Gloomy Sunday" or "Blue Prelude" = y'all are amateurs.

Also country music... in general. Lee Hazlewood is my fave, especially "My Autumn's Done Come" and "For One Moment"

I cannot believe I forgot "It's Not". That's the ultimate song about depression.

    Torres - "Waterfall"

The rocks below, they bare their teeth
They all conspire to set me free
I sip my tea and contemplate all the possibilities
Oh, waterfall, do you ever think maybe it'll all be better in the morning?
From way up here, it looks so calm
Do you ever make it halfway down and think
"God, I never meant to jump at all."?

    Hazel English - "I'm Fine"

I can't deny I'm paralysed from the inside
Everyday I wake to feel the same
And every time you ask me how I'm feeling
I just smile and tell you that I'm fine

    Vince Staples - "Party People"

Awkward silence, my brain scream louder
Askin' when I'm gon' blast myself
Couple problems my cash can't help
Human issues, too strong for tissues
False bravado all masked by wealth
