    Fu¢k the record company playlist.

There are probably enough "Fuck the record company" songs to make an album but I'm having trouble remembering what some of them are.

    I got
    Curtain Call
    Teenage Hustling
    Code Red
    Big Wheel

    What am I missing?

maybe not about the record company but having that kind of defiant tone:

    Crucify
Cruel (“celebrate your top 10 in the charts of pain”)
    Bliss
Barons of Suburbia (“I’m piecing a potion..”)

I remember reading that she plays 'Leather' every time someone requests it, because (somebody at) the label didn't like it back then, and she believed in the song. Correct me if I'm wrong! I also remember reading somewhere that she wore orange knickers on a day that she had to face some record company people - a meeting which she knew would be a difficult one. Could be that the 'intro jam' to Marys Of The Sea' is about that as well. But hey, just my thoughts.

    The Power Of Orange Knickers
    The power of orange knickers
    under my petty coat
the power of listening to what
you don't want me to know

The 'intro jam' of 'Marys Of The Sea'
I'm gonna face the dark man
    just back me on up
he's white as a ghost with a tie and a suit
he thinks that he's got me on the corner of his shoe
(...) I gotta face some kind of evil tomorrow

    Apollo's Frock
cause I am tired of you taking from me
and I have let you eat from the fruits of my tree
you and your predators were warned
if the cubs were drawn in for the last time
you would officially cross my line

Plus, basically the entire setlist of her Dranouter show in 2008 was a big 'fuck you' to her record company:

    Crucify
    Siren
    Improv/Body and Soul
    Silent All These Years
    Suede
    Leather
    Take to the Sky
    Apollo's Frock
    Mr. Zebra
    Barons of Suburbia
    Cloud on My Tongue
    Precious Things
    Amber Waves

Orange Knickers, definitely. I remember an interview where she talked about writing the track on the day that she was going to a record company meeting. I’ll see if I can find it.

I think the title of this thread is part of the reason why I don’t like a lot TBK, ADP, and AATS. She released 3 records in a row talking about the same things: her troublesome relationship with her record company and with her husband. All 3 records with her weakest, least interesting song arrangements. I really feel for what T was dealing with personally at this time though and can see these albums as guilty pleasures albums - now that she seems to have found herself again with NOH, UG and NI.

Even though NOH still talked about relationship problems, it took a fresh approach and had other themes throughout.

I would much rather listen to TBK than NOH anyday.

Of all these songs, Curtain Call is the saddest and most depressing. This video (with wonky eye) has been posted many times but it is still so hard to watch.

Man, I don't think I'd seen that performance since it was originally broadcast. The look that flits across her face near the beginning, as she sings the line 'The looking glass reflects'. :-( It's hard not to read it as her knowing exactly how she looked with whatever had happened to her eye at that time. So sad.

For me, this performance of Curtain Call carries a heavy energy similar to the '97 rainn concert (as in Tori facing very difficult personal problems). When it first aired I didn't notice it, but with this 10 year gap, UG and NI, it was clearly one of her most dark periods.

God, she even lets out a tiny breath, so sad

The "Maybe California" from that show is also a rough watch. When she sings "why not?" she grits her teeth and I swear it was her that was thinking of taking the header off that cliff.

That performance says everything about that era. It was so hard to watch but now that it is behind her, it's an important part of her history.
I wouldn't mind some new material that really explored what she was going through then. Honestly and without the lip gloss.
