Things seem okay? My fever went away. I've had some weird flu-like symptoms -- aches, sore neck, some GI issues, but nothing extreme. The shitty part is that I don't qualify for the test so I guess I just stay home for a month and hope whatever I had is gone? It's likely nothing, but how do I know?

A buddy of mine graduated medical school in the fall and took a job with a hospital in Tampa. I asked him a couple days ago if things were crazy there and he said they hadn't had any known cases yet. Fast-forward to last night and he sends me a picture wearing an N95 mask and a full face guard with the caption "It's happening." Apparently some of those asshole Spring Break college kids who ignored the social distancing guidelines and partied it up on the beach have now tested positive for it, including 5 from Tampa.

    UGH.

CDC says coronavirus survived in Princess Cruise ship cabins for up to 17 days after passengers left

The coronavirus survived for up to 17 days aboard the Diamond Princess cruise ship, living far longer on surfaces than previous research has shown, according to new data published Monday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The study examined the Japanese and U.S. government efforts to contain the COVID-19 outbreaks on the Carnival-owned Diamond Princess ship in Japan and the Grand Princess ship in California. Passengers and crew on both ships were quarantined on board after previous guests, who didn’t have any symptoms while aboard each of the ships, tested positive for COVID-19 after landing ashore.

The virus “was identified on a variety of surfaces in cabins of both symptomatic and asymptomatic infected passengers up to 17 days after cabins were vacated on the Diamond Princess but before disinfection procedures had been conducted,” the researchers wrote, adding that the finding doesn’t necessarily mean the virus spread by surface.

Ugh I'm sorry. It's too bad you can't find a congressperson or senator's face to cough in and wait to get their results back. It seems that or being a celebrity is one of two ways to currently get rested in this shithole country.

Also loving how quickly people moved to publicly say they are willing to sacrifice the old and sick if it means they don't have to stay home for a few weeks. I love confirmation that I am expendable. I hope these people also realize that in this case, "sick" and at risk includes being: overweight, having high blood pressure, having diabetes, taking any number of medications that make your immune system weak which is a shitload of stuff, having asthma, smoking, and more. So between age considerations and the health issues that make one more likely to get seriously ill or die from this, they're saying they're cool with about 80% of this country, if not more, at risk of getting this and dying. Telling that amount of people that if they get it and die, it was worth it so the 20% or so considered healthy didn't have to be inconvenienced for a few weeks.

    And we're doomed.

But as far as I understand it is unclear whether the amount of the virus that is still traceable after such a long time would be enough to get someone infected.

The economy is done. The quicker people accept it and understand it, the better off we'll be. We could have an overnight cure and the economy is still done. School can't go back with 24 hours' notice. A lot of businesses are permanently shuttered. Many would take days or weeks to get back up and running. The best we can do is help the people from being done. In the most socialist of socialisty policies we can muster post-FDR. Trickle up is the only way that works. And it's only a temporary fix. We can have severe, generation-lasting injuries, or we can soften the blow and have a rough few years. Some republican ninny can be like "let's open back up" but most of the states are going to do their own thing. Since we couldn't federalize this as an emergency and work as one, the other side to that is the reasonable states can actually help their people by ignoring Trump. And let's say those Trump idiots fling open movie theaters April 1... who here is going? To a club? To a restaurant? Please.

Maybe for once, someone will call me "Sir" without adding, "You're making a scene."

PornHub is better than my govt

Prince Charles has it. Mike Dukakis is hospitalized, but with pneumonia not covid. So... that's not good being around all those people running low on ppe and energy who have been exposed..

The New York Times Editorial Board: Coronavirus Is Advancing. All Americans Need to Shelter in Place.

    https://www.nytimes.com/2020/03/24/o...-lockdown.html

I think what's so challenging right now, which they point in that piece, is that most Americans aren't feeling or seeing the effects of coronavirus right now in terms of their health and the people they care about. I really don't think people are understanding how dire the situation is at hospitals already in terms of the lack of respirators and equipment. A good friend of mine works at a major hospital and was saying she thinks people (wrongly) think it's impossible things could be this bad.

And sadly I don't think a lot of people are really going to get it until they start seeing and feeling it themselves.

OK, the world really IS off its axis. I just teared up a little at a statement by an online pornography company.

We all know that our President is a racist game show host (h/t Chris Hayes) whose administration is a pure kakistocracy. And the beautiful thing is that people, instead of just complaining about that, are trying to just figure out something to do to help. I saw a story about a girl who was making PPE masks on her sewing machine. It may seem weird to compare that to the PornHub story, but it's the same impulse.

Nobody's DOING anything. Let's DO something.
In November, vote for the candidate who believes in science.
