    The DNC Deathwatch Thread

    Let's begin with . . . infighting!

Gibbs vents anger about criticism from "The Professional Left"

The White House is simmering with anger at criticism from liberals who say President Obama is more concerned with deal-making than ideological purity.

During an interview with The Hill in his West Wing office, White House press secretary Robert Gibbs blasted liberal naysayers, whom he said would never regard anything the president did as good enough.

“I hear these people saying he’s like George Bush. Those people ought to be drug tested,” Gibbs said. “I mean, it’s crazy.”

The press secretary dismissed the “professional left” in terms very similar to those used by their opponents on the ideological right, saying, “They will be satisfied when we have Canadian healthcare and we’ve eliminated the Pentagon. That’s not reality.”

Of those who complain that Obama caved to centrists on issues such as healthcare reform, Gibbs said: “They wouldn’t be satisfied if Dennis Kucinich was president.”

    ...

Some on the left were all like "Nuh-uh!"

Rep. Keith Ellison (D-Minn.), an active member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, said Gibbs went too far. "This is not the first time that Mr. Gibbs has made untoward and inflammatory comments and I certainly hope that people in the White House don't share his view that the left is unimportant to the president," he said. "I understand him having some loyalty to the president who employs him, but I think he's walking over the line."

...And, again, people of all political shades worked very hard to help the president become the president. Why would he want to go out and deliberately insult the president's base? And why would he confuse legitimate critique with some sort of lack of loyalty. Isn't this what the far right does? Punishes people who are not ideologically aligned with President Bush?"

It's wrong to suggest that progressives want to eliminate the Pentagon, said Ellison, adding that he doesn't know a single Democrat who has espoused that view. "I know of none. ..."

Rep. Raul Grijalva (D-Ariz.), the co-chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, also lashed out at Gibbs on Tuesday.

"I think before Gibbs or the White House points figures at liberals and progressives, they ought to check their own record," Grijalva told HuffPost. "The whole drug testing thing -- our dissatisfaction is based on [the fact that] we haven't met the expectations and we're hearing that from our base, period."

Grijalva was critical of the White House for abandoning the public insurance option during the health care reform debate, and for otherwise compromising too quickly with a Republican Party uninterested in bipartisanship. ...ibbs has since walked back his criticism of what he deemed the "professional left."

And Olbermann makes a funny about the White House being the "Amateur Left"

Personally, I'm glad they've got the WH on the defensive. I would hope that Obama could withstand people holding his feet to the fire, so to speak.

    SC's Increasingly Trainwrecky Alvin Greene

Longshot Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Alvin Greene was indicted Friday on two charges, including a felony charge of showing pornography to a teenage student in a South Carolina college computer lab.

Greene surprised the party establishment with his primary victory in June. His arrest in November was first reported by The Associated Press the day after he won the nomination.

Authorities said he approached a student in a University of South Carolina computer lab, showed her obscene photos online, then talked about going to her dorm room.

A Richland County grand jury indicted Greene, 32, for disseminating, procuring or promoting obscenity – a felony – as well as a misdemeanor charge of communicating obscene materials to a person without consent.

If convicted, Greene could face up to three years in prison for the misdemeanor or up to five years for the felony.

Greene has said he's staying in the race. In the months since his victory, Greene has given a series of awkward interviews to reporters clamoring for more information on the man who lives in Manning with his ailing father. In one interview, he suggested that the state's economy could be improved by making and selling action figures depicting him in his uniform.

Greene now has a website and says he has raised less than $1,000. He faces Republican U.S. Sen. Jim DeMint in the fall. The popular incumbent has raised more than $3 million.

Texas Dem Rep. Steered Black Caucus Scholarships To Family And Friends

A Texas congresswoman admitted that she wrongly steered thousands of dollars in college scholarships from the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation to her own relatives and the children of a staff member but said she did so unintentionally.

Democratic Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson said in a statement Monday that she will reimburse the foundation by the end of the week. She did not state how much money was involved. The Dallas Morning News reported Monday that 23 scholarships she has handed out since 2005 violated the foundation's eligibility rules.

The Morning News reported on its website that Johnson had arranged scholarships between 2005 and 2008 for two grandsons and two grandnephews and the son and daughter of a Dallas-based aide, Rod Givens. The newspaper placed the amount of those scholarships at up to $20,000.

(CNN)–Former U.S. Senator John Edwards, pleaded not guilty to conspiracy and campaign law violations in early June. His mug shot was obtained by CNN following a Freedom of Information Act request.

The plea came after a federal grand jury indicted him on six counts, including conspiracy, issuing false statements and violating campaign contribution laws.

A grand jury has been investigating whether money given to support Edwards' mistress, Rielle Hunter, by benefactors of Edwards should have been considered campaign donations, a contention Edwards' team has disputed.

A plea deal between the two-time presidential candidate and the U.S. Justice Department fell apart over the the Department's requirement that Edwards serve jail time. Wanting to have "minimal" impact on his two younger children, the former senator refused to agree.

I used to really admire John Edwards. Now I feel like the mere sight of him and his creepriffic "I made a sex tape with my pregnant mistress while my wife was dying of cancer" smile make me hold back the vomit. He's a douche. And yes, I judge him for making a sex tape with his pregnant mistress while his wife was dying of cancer, because that shit is motherfucking gross no matter what (even if she weren't pregnant, but that just ups the nast factor). then to find out he used campaign money for it all? UGHHH *takes a shower*.

I'll never forget the day (and I *think* this was on MSNBC's Hardball) that Ann Coulter was the guest and she'd referred to John Edwards as a faggot. Elizabeth called in to the show and confronted Ann. There she was, sick and dying, calling out one of the right's biggest hatriots to defend that piece of shit. She was a class act until the very end. She bought Christmas presents for John's daughter with Hunter and delivered them to her in person. I can't say with 100% certainty that part of that was her giant fuck you to Hunter but I would like to think her intentions were for the most part very good.

^When Coulter was on Piers Morgan, she said something weird about being disgusted with the thought of being married. She said something like, "First, I couldn't imagine the thought of being married..."

There is a lot going on inside that Ann Coulter. I think she is in a lot inner turmoil and pain

    Kucinich loses primary after redistricting

On Tuesday night, progressives confronted the unimaginable: Congress without Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio). The eight-term congressman lost his primary election for Ohio's newly created 9th district to Rep. Marcy Kaptur (D-Ohio).

The loss also deprives the nation of a general election contest between two national polarizing figures, as one of the candidates in the district's GOP primary was Joe Wurzelbacher -- better known as "Joe the Plumber." The GOP race was still too close to call at the time of publishing.

Kaptur and Kucinich were victims of a congressional redistricting process that combined their seats. Because of the population losses recorded by the 2010 U.S. Census, Ohio lost two congressional districts and the borders of the remaining districts were redrawn. The new map combines the districts of Kaptur, who represents what is currently the 9th district, and Kucinich, who represents the 10th.

According to the count on the official Ohio secretary of state website, Kaptur had won four out of the five counties in the district, although not all of the ballots had been counted.

"I thought it was ours to win," she said, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer, but in her speech, she assured Kucinich's former constituents that she would "pay attention to them, too."

"I understand that it takes awhile for people to get used to you," she said.

Kucinich was elected mayor at the age of 31 and became known nationally as the "boy mayor of Cleveland." It was in that position that his well-earned reputation for what backers called principle, and enemies called stubborness, was born. It was the late '70s, and the finances of the city were in shambles, as they were across much of the country. Major banks approached the "boy mayor" with an offer they thought he couldn't refuse: privatize the local utility, Muni Light, or face bankruptcy. Kucinich wouldn't sell and the city went into default.

Predictably, his popularity plummeted, and Kucinich was tossed out of office two years after being sworn in. His political career apparently over, he languished professionally and personally. As the years wore on, however, and surrounding cities paid staggering costs for having privatized their own utilities, the people of Cleveland began to take another look at Kucinich. His refusal to sell out -- his willingness to take the political hit for what he believed in -- turned him into a retroactively popular figure. Later studies of Kucinich's decision confirmed that he saved the city and its ratepayers millions over the years.
Aww. Hopefully there'll be a role for him.
